Welcome to Kindergarten!
I am excited to be sharing this year with you at Northern Elementary School. I look forward to spending time with you and your first grader. Please feel free to share with me any questions or concerns that you or your child may have at any time throughout the year! Below is a little information to help your child’s transition into first grade go more smoothly.
School Routine
School begins at 7:55am here at Northern Elementary. Students may be dropped off at the front door at 7:40 each day. Buses arriving will drop students off at the double doors on the north side of the school. Parents are being asked to drop children there also to help keep congestion down and to provide a safer environment when entering school. Children arriving before 7:55am have the choice of going to breakfast or outside until 7:55am when the first bell rings. Children choosing to go outside are to bring backpacks to their locker (not in the room) and then go out. Children choosing to eat breakfast here at school may go straight to breakfast upon arrival. Please have your child dressed in appropriate outdoor clothing when they arrive at the school (boots, snow pants, etc. when needed) as they will go directly out. Many times I have morning meetings or I am preparing and not in the room to supervise the children before 8:00am. Thank you for understanding! Class begins at 8:05am this year. Children arriving after this time are counted as tardy.
Dismissal
School will dismiss at 2:40pm each day. The first four days classes will be letting out 15 minutes early to help children become familiar with the busing. The buses will be leaving at the same time as usual on these days so do not expect your “bus rider” home early. Please plan to pick your child up at 2:35pm if they are not riding the bus. Children planning to ride the bus during the school year are encouraged to ride from the start to get used to the routine and minimize fears.
The kindergarten teachers are asking parents to wait down by the main entrance doors when picking up children at the end of the day. Please send a note or call each time your child is to go home in a different manner than usual. If I do not receive a note or phone call, school policy states that the child is to go where he/she usually goes after school (bus, daycare, home etc.) If you plan to pick your child up early, please see Vickie our school secretary in the office and she will call down to have me dismiss your child. PLEASE do not leave a transportation change for your child on my answering machine as I often do not have a chance to check it until after school. Thank you!
Snack
We will have snack each day. Please send snacks or $10 periodically to help cover snack time in our classroom. We have 20 students.
B.E.E Books (Bring Everything Everyday)
The BEE Book is a three ring binder with the school planner and a zip pouch. This is a school wide program to improve communication between home and school. It is important that you check the planner each night for information and then sign your initials. This way I know that you have read through what has been written, removed notes and your child's papers. I will stamp your child's BEE Book each morning to indicate that I have read any notes you have written in the BEE Book/received papers you have sent. Lunch money and other small items can be sent to school in the zip pouch. Please remove papers to be left at home daily.
Birthdays
Student birthdays will be celebrated during the school year. “Summer Birthday Kids” will be celebrated on their half day. Please feel free to send store-bought treats for your child’s birthday or half birthday if you so choose. Birthday arrangements (parties) should be made outside of school. I can provide you with the phone number/address of each student whose parents wish to share this information. If your child has invitations for our class, please give them to me and I will pass them out. The kindergarten teachers are asking invitations only to be sent to school if everyone in our class is invited or all girls or all boys from our class are invited. Thank you.
Backpacks
These will be full to overflowing with the work and projects that your child has accomplished in Kindergarten. Please check your child’s backpack daily to reinforce the work he/she has done and to check for any notices from school or myself. The school year goes by quickly and I have many exciting things planned, I don’t want your child to miss a thing!
Questions and Concerns
My goal for my kindergarteners is to enjoy fun filled learning in all academic areas. I also believe that social skills and friendships are an important part of the school day.
If you have any questions or concerns during the school year please don’t hesitate to contact me! However, Your child’s education is important and a phone call during the day takes away their learning time so if it works for you please call me between 7:40-8:00am or 3:00-3:30pm. I can be reached at 333-3260 during the times listed above or Emailing works best at: l[email protected]
**Note: I have had trouble with my school voicemail in the past so if your child is gone or you have any transportation information or changes for the day please contact Vickie in the office rather than leaving a message. All other notes or questions can be sent to my email. I am able to answer and check my email more often in the day!
Thank you for letting me help make some great memories for you and your child!
